Why is gravure printing considered the highest quality?

Gravure printing—also known as rotogravure—is a technique that involves directly engraving the image onto a metal cylinder, usually made of copper-coated steel, using a matrix of tiny cells or cavities. These cells, of varying depths depending on the desired colour intensity, are filled with liquid ink. As the cylinder rotates, the ink is transferred to the substrate (such as plastic film) with great precision, generating a high-definition image.

This technique is widely recognized for offering exceptional print quality thanks to two key factors:

1. Maximum definition and colour richness: the main advantage of rotogravure over other printing techniques is its ability to reproduce images with outstanding clarity, richness of detail, and colour depth. Thanks to cylinder engraving, a much higher definition is achieved, ideal for packaging that requires a striking visual finish. Furthermore, it allows for precise reproduction of tonal gradations and smooth transitions between colours, making it the best choice for complex or photographic designs. As a result, images appear to come alive on the packaging, helping to capture the consumer's attention on the shelf.

2. Consistent Quality Over Long Runs: another distinguishing feature of gravure printing is its extraordinary consistency. Even in long production runs, it maintains impeccable uniformity of colour and detail from the first print to the last. This stability is essential for brands seeking a consistent image across all their products, with no batch-to-batch variations.

Furthermore, at IFLEX we know that achieving the highest quality depends not only on the technology but also on how it is managed. That's why we integrate the entire production process internally, including cylinder engraving, allowing us to precisely control every phase. This approach ensures greater reliability, agile delivery times, and responsiveness to any customer need.
